The typical mantra against American foreign policy toward the Middle-East is that we are stirring up the Muslims & have done so since the 1948 U.N. sanctioned statehood of Israel.  Further, we are led to believe that the Muslims didn’t have a problem with the United States until 1948.  This is historically incorrect.

At the very birth of the nation of America this nation was at war with Muslim terrorists, but at that time those terrorists were known as the “Barbary Pirates”.  These were Ottoman corsairs from the Northern African nations who had been raiding European ships, ports & cities since the middle-ages.  This was the main reason that the Europeans began exploring for new ways to the Indies; the Muslims would not allow them passage.  And because of it, Europeans found out that Africa had a southern tip & they eventually found the New World…all because of the aggression of the Muslims.

In 1783 America was settling peace with England & in 1784 the first American ship was seized by Muslim pirates from Morocco.  It took six months of negotiations and a bribe payment of $60,000 before the matter was settled.

In 1786 Thomas Jefferson, then the ambassador to France, & John Adams, then the ambassador to Britain met in London with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the ambassador to Britain from Tripoli Libya.  The Americans asked Adja why his government was hostile to American ships even though there had been no provocation.  The Muslim ambassador’s response was reported to America’s Continental Congress:

That it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.

American ships continued to be harassed not only when near the Middle-East but also from Muslim pirates aggravating European waters.  It was directly due to this fact that America formed the Marines.  As a matter of fact the Marine pseudonym “Leather Necks” comes from the fact that those early Marines wore leather collars to hinder the lopping off of their heads from the Muslims.

According to a Washington Times article, membership to CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) has declined by more than 90% since the 2001 attacks on the U.S.  This was a decline from approximately 29,000 to only 1,700 members.  This dramatic decline also affected CAIR financially as annual dues dropped from $732,765 in 2000, when yearly dues cost $25, to $58,750 in 2006, when the group charged $35.

Now, on the surface it may appear to be that people are backing away from supporting an expressly Muslim organization.  The question is why?  Is it really because there has been a downturn in support or is it more that people, while still being staunchly pro-Islamic do not want an easy paper trail to identify them?

CAIR has been under suspicion as a sponsor of known terrorist groups & has even been named by the Justice Department as "unindicted co-conspirators" in a federal case against another foundation charged with providing funds to a terrorist group.
